Award-winning Driftwood Retreat & Eco-tours shares the rich history and wildlife of the magical Wairau Lagoon, ten minutes’ drive from Blenheim, Marlborough. It is the earliest known site of human occupation in New Zealand and home to over 90 species of birds, including the migrant bartailed godwit and the spectacular royal spoonbill.
The tours are by stable kayaks on a slow moving tidal river, if weather is unsuitable an option is available to visit the same area by comfortable 4X4 air-conditioned van.
The four hour tour is tailored for private groups for a quality experience and are complemented by stories of local early history, interpretation of the wildlife and a homemade picnic of local foods. It is a must for bird lovers or photographers! Tours can be tailored to include other interests.
Comfortable eco accommodation is available on site for up to four people. It is a great place to unwind. Guest can walk around our eight hectare conservation wetland and meet our alpacas. A generous homemade continental breakfast is supplied the night before so you can get up when you feel like it. We are only ten minutes’ drive from vineyards and other Marlborough highlights.
Driftwood Eco Tours has a strong conservation ethos and offsets its carbon footprint by planting one tree per tour. We have been operating since 2004 and have been independently safety audited.
Bird & history eco tour of the Wairau Lagoon by kayak

A private guided tour with knowledgeable commentary on the Opawa River & Wairau Lagoon, significant for being the first known site of occupation in New Zealand by the Polynesian Moa Hunter and now home for over 90 species of bird.
Tours are scheduled to the tide and moon for the best birding and photography experience, see the time table on or website.
Basic paddling instruction is given, no prior experience is necessary. Double and single kayaks are available.
The tours are run at the pace of the slowest person, on our tours it is the journey that is important not the destination. A short walk can be part of the tour.

The accommodation is a tasteful blend of the pre-loved and modern convenience featuring a kitchenette with mini fridge and microwave oven. It has been designed to be low tech so you can have a technological detox. (Limited board band is available and free and we are in range of cell phone coverage for making those essential arrangements).

Spend the balance of your time tasting wine in the nearby vineyards, cruising on the Marlborough Sounds (price not included in package for these activities) or just relaxing around our twelve hectare lifestyle farm. Look for birds in our eight hectare conservation wetland. We can and put you in touch with the local community’s cultural events and suggest restaurants.
