Lake Heron Station is a  spectacular 20,000 ha family-owned  merino sheep property in the heart of the South Island. Surrounded by rugged mountains and situated on the  shores of beautiful  Lake  Heron, the landscapes are vast and natural. The Todhunter Family have been hosting guests on the property since 1998. 

Authenticity, personal attention and bespoke farm tours and scenic flights, are all part of guests’ experiences on the station. Guests have  access to lovely walks and a rowboat on Lake  Heron.  

Although  providing guests with a  wonderful  feeling of remoteness, the station is an easy 2 hour drive from Christchurch International Airport.

The Fisherman’s Hut – accommodation and meal package

Stylish self-contained one-bedroom cottage. Couples only.

This is a beautifully appointed cottage, with  generous living area, one king bed and ensuite.  Fully equipped laundry and kitchen. The outlook is across a broad valley and to  the mountains.

Wine and  a 2-course dinner, sourced from local  produce and the station garden, is provided at the guest accommodation. 

Breakfast is served in the large station  homestead and features homemade muesli,  fresh fruit, yoghurt and locally sourced eggs and bacon.

Guests are provided with a picnic lunch hamper, with fresh baking, sandwiches and fruit.

Lake Heron Cottage – accommodation and meal package

A restored station cottage circa 1900. Sleeps 2 – 4 guests.

A self-contained cottage  with an open fire, full kitchen and laundry,  quality furnishings and linens and  a lovely  ambiance.

One king room, one queen room and a  small 2 bed  bunkroom (children only.)

Scenic Plane Flights

Exclusive scenic mountain flights departing from the station airfield – we offer a range of flight options  including scenic flights and pick up and drop off options  over the  South Island. 

Pilot and station owner, Philip Todhunter, is our chief pilot and knows and loves the mountains of the  South Island intimately. He has  been  mountain flying for over 3  decades. We  take  pride in ensuring a very personal service for our flying  guests.

Private full day tour  of the  station, including viewing the woolshed and  gaining an insight into the production of high-quality merino fibre, meeting  our pet sheep, a station 4WD tour, visiting an historic mustering hut, picnic lunch and a  guided walk. Please note tours may vary according to  guests’ interests, current farm activities and the weather.
