Kiwi Spotting on Stewart Island price reduction
Ulva's Guided Walks is announcing a reduction (yes, a reduction!) in rate for our very popular evening kiwi spotting tour at Mamaku Point conservation reserve. From 1st April 2020 the retail rate is being reduced from $150 to $130 per person ($120pp nett down to $104pp nett).
In choosing Ulva’s Guided Walks our clients help support important conservation projects at Stewart Island and further afield. We sponsor Gadget the rodent detector dog (Conservation Dogs Programme) who lives at Stewart Island with her handler. Gadget regularly patrol Stewart Island, Ulva Island and many other New Zealand islands to detect pesky rats and mice to stop them from killing our native birds. In addition, for every person on our kiwi spotting tour we make a donation to the Mamaku Point Conservation Trust to help protect this predator-free area.
Please note: Coronet Peak Tandem Paraglading and Hang Gliding pickup location in Queenstown changed.
The pickup is now in front of the Ivan Clarke Gallery, 39 Camp Street, downtown Queenstown (previously 37 Camp Street).

Last month, it was announced that the Hump Ridge Track is to be NZ's 11th Great Walk! This stunning 3-day guided walk is a must for anyone who loves hiking and the spectacular beauty of Fiordland National Park . It's certainly my favourite multi-day walk, and I've walked most of NZ's Great Walks.

Introducing: the team at Ulva's Guided Walks - Stewart Island
Ulva's Guided Walks was established in 2000 by Ulva Goodwillie when visitors to Stewart Island began expressing a desire for guides to show them around Ulva Island bird sanctuary. Ulva and her team of local guides are passionate about Ulva Island and the special place that the whole team calls home, Stewart Island. Join them for a unique experience, learning about native flora and fauna, from a Maori and local Stewart Island perspective. Half day, full day and evening tours are available. The most popular experience is a morning Ulva Island guided walk through ancient podocarp forest, surrounded by bird song; closely followed by a birdwatching package to see rare and endemic land birds, seabirds and the iconic Stewart Island Brown Kiwi.
Ulva Goodwillie (owner & guide) is an articulate, friendly, well-informed Stewart Islander who is passionate about her home and committed to giving visitors a special insight into Rakiura National Park's unique attraction, Ulva Island. Ulva bears the name of the lovely island sanctuary situated in Waka o Te Wera (Paterson Inlet, Stewart Island), also the wildlife sanctuary of Ulva Isle in the Hebrides of Scotland. A highlight of her walking programme is a leisurely ramble which introduces visitors to Ulva Island's history, scenery and spectacular birdlife.
Jules Retberg (office manager) loves nature and wildlife although admits it’s not her natural habitat, as she grew up in the outskirts of London! She is a self-confessed computer geek; a born organiser and administrator. She uses her own experiences of worldwide travel to help Ulva’s Guided Walks’ clients make informed choices when planning what is often a once in a lifetime trip and make the best of their time at Stewart Island and Ulva Island. Jules left the UK in 2007 and Stewart Island has been home ever since. Outside of the office, Jules is a beachcomber and can be found at any one of Stewart Island’s stunning beaches, walking her dog and searching for natural treasures to photograph or write about.
Matt Jones (guide) is originally from the UK and has lived and worked on Stewart Island since 2007 as a bird watching guide. A mad-keen wildlife watcher from a young age, particularly birds, Matt’s obsession fortunately became his career. With a UK list of over 400 birds and a New Zealand list topping over 200, his impressive world list continues to grow thanks to extensive worldwide travels. However, Matt’s heart is firmly planted on Stewart Island and he likes nothing more than showing visiting birdwatchers rare and endemic birds of Ulva Island, seabirds and New Zealand’s iconic kiwi. Stewart Island conservation work includes annual bird call counts, data gathering (Southern New Zealand Dotterel), and the Kakapo Recovery programme. In 2011 he became chairman of the Ulva Island Charitable Trust which (with the Department of Conservation) works to keep Ulva Island open to the public and free of introduced pests.
Denise Hayes (guide) has a lifelong love of all things New Zealand but especially native birds and plants. She was involved in both volunteer and paid work protecting the New Zealand environment prior to making Stewart Island her home in 2009. Since then Denise has been involved in many aspects of conservation on Stewart Island ranging from the Kakapo recovery programme, kiwi monitoring, penguin counts, bird call counts, titi burrow and possum monitoring, and pest control. She recently set up her own pest control business on Stewart Island. Denise is an avid gardener and loves to fish, hunt, bird watch and tramp to remote parts of Stewart Island.
Sandy King (guide) grew up on Stewart Island and was involved in the early concept and planning to eradicate Norway rats from Ulva Island in the 1990s. Her career path is firmly rooted in conservation and wildlife with a particular interest in islands. Sandy has been involved in pest eradication projects at Campbell, Codfish and Macquarie Islands and is now part of the Conservation Dogs Programme as handler of Gadget, a rodent detection dog. Sandy and Gadget travel around New Zealand detecting rodents and promoting island biosecurity, as well as utilising their expertise at home on Stewart Island and Ulva Island.
Queenstown Wine Trail's team
Our team is made up locals who enjoy great wine and tasty food but more importantly who love to host people.
The beauty of guiding in Queenstown is that you get to meet all types of people from all over the world and you never know what your clients are going to be like until you meet them.
Lance, owner and senior guide, has been showing people around the Queenstown wineries for 27 years and still has the passion to make it memorable. Here is a review we received just yesterday from a client on our Wine Hopper Bus – “We had a wonderful day on this trip, Lance our guide was just fantastic. His local knowledge added enormously to our great experience. What a lovely person, friendly helpful, informative, the man was made for this. He is a pure natural, I would highly recommend Wine-hopper Queenstown to visitors to the area - Rita”

These lambs are not widely found in NZ and therefore offer a very unique experience for our guests during their stay. The sheep with their lambs will be located directly next to the Retreat and there will be food at the Retreat for our guests to take and feed, visit, and generally enjoy these beautiful animals throughout the duration of their stay.
